Important 2026 W-2 & 1099 Tax Form Changes

New IRS reporting updates may affect W-2, 1099, 1098, 5498, W-2G, and 1042-S forms for the 2026 tax year.

Why These 2026 Tax Form Changes Matter

Businesses, payroll providers, accountants, and tax preparers should review the 2026 tax form updates before ordering year-end forms. Several IRS forms now include new reporting boxes, revised address fields, updated penalty amounts, and reprogramming requirements.

Important: New form stock may be required for several 2026 information returns, including certain W-2, 1099, 1098, 5498, W-2G, and 1042-S forms.

Key 2026 W-2 Changes

  • Box 14 has changed: Box 14 is now split into Box 14a and Box 14b.
  • New Box 14b: Used for Treasury Tipped Occupation Code(s).
  • New Box 12 codes: Code TP for cash tips, Code TT for qualified overtime, and Code TA for certain employer contributions.
  • Wage reporting threshold: For wages paid after 2025, the threshold increases from $600 to $2,000 when no federal income tax, Social Security, or Medicare tax was withheld.

Penalty Increases for Information Returns

Penalties for failure to file or furnish correct information returns have increased for returns required to be filed after December 31, 2025. Businesses should order the correct forms early and confirm filing requirements before deadline season.

$60

Per return if corrected within 30 days of the due date.

$130

Per return if corrected more than 30 days late but by August 1.

$340
